If you need an alarm clock to wake up for work, its a problem

If you need an alarm clock to wake up for work, its a problemIf you need an alarm clock to wake up for work, its a problemAn article inThe New York Timeshighlights a recent trend among companies across the globe allowing employees to tweak their schedules based on when they work best. One expert, Cline Vetter, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and director of the universitys circadian and sleep epidemiology lab, told The Times Emily Laber-Warren that as many as 80% of people have work schedules that clash with their internal clocks. These internal clocks are also known as chronotypes, or your biological predisposition to be a morning person, an evening person, or somewhere in between.Scientists have been studying chronobiology for a while. But the topic has gained more widespread attention recently. For example, in his book The Power of When, psychologist and sleep specialist Dr. Michael Breus assigns labels tobroad categories of chronotypes dolphins, lio ns, bears, and wolves. According to Breus, roughly half the population is made up of bears, meaning their internal clocks track the rise and fall of the sun and they need a full eight hours of sleep a night. You can tell if your chronotype clashes with your work schedule by asking yourself a simple question Do you use an alarm clock to wake up? If so, Laber-Warren writes, youre out of sync with your own biology.Employees who work at companies that mandate the same, strict work hours for everyone may have it rough. But more organizations are starting to recognize the important role chronotypes play in performance, and encouraging people to figure out their own.For example, The Times article mentions a ThyssenKrupp steel factory in Germany, which assigned shifts based on chronotypes. Researchers reported that employees got more (and better quality) sleep. And at the Denmark offices of AbbVie, a pharmaceutical company, employees go through a nine-hour training program that helps them fig ure out when they should tackle tough projects, and then craft their work schedules accordingly. This article welches originally published on Business Insider.close dialogAdvertisement close dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012255 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close z-index 2-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from -ms-transform rotate(0deg) to -ms-transform rotate(360deg) -moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from -moz-transform rotate(0deg) to -moz-transform rotate(360deg) -webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from -webkit-transform rotate(0deg) to -webkit-transform rotate(360deg) keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin from transform rotate(0deg) to transform rotate(360deg) bx-close-inside-1012255 top 0 right 0 / * KD - Remove padding from video wrapper and set height to 100% */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper padding-top 0important height 100%.bx-custombx-campaign-1012255 bx-creative-1012255 .bx-wrap height auto/* KD - Change positioning to static as that was not necesaary and here you can adjust the height of the video element */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper video position static/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *first-child width 100%.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative background-color transparentborder-style nonemax-width 900px.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close stroke whitebackground-color blackborder-style solidborder-color whiteborder-width 1px.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-AFvXBOB padding 10pxdisplay blockwidth auto.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y width auto.bxc.bx-campaign-10122 55 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y *first-child padding 2px 4pxfont-size 10pxcolor rgb(255, 255, 255)text-transform uppercasebackground-color rgb(0, 0, 0)background-color rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34)

ASME President Julio Guerrero (right) presented Taylor with his Fellow certificate. Photo by Wil Haywood, Public Information The ASME Board of Governors (BOG) convened at the Societys New York headquarters on April 14 and 15 to address a number of topics concerning the Society. During the lively two-day meeting, Board members discussed a number of items, including the development of the Societys new strategy, ASME NOW, and the process of selecting the core technologies that would be the foundation of the Societys future product portfolio.During the meeting, BOG member John Goossen and Michael Ireland, ASMEs associat e executive director for engineering, presented the Board with an update on ASME NOW, which is intended to enhance ASMEs relevance and impact to global constituents and establish the Society as the go-to organization for solving the worlds technology problems. To reach this objective, ASME will need to take a three-tiered approach, which will involve becoming more market facing, developing business development competency and product sophistication, and engaging its stakeholders and delivering value.Key to ASMEs success in becoming a more market-facing organization is the selection of a group of technologies to serve as the foundation of the Societys product portfolio. During his presentation, Ireland reviewed the Societys recent technology selection process activities, which included the recent gathering of 20 thought leaders from around the world to help ASME identify these technologies. During the workshop, the volunteers, who were named the Technology Advisory Panel (TAP), select ed 13 technologies they saw as most germane to ASME. (Read more about the TAP meeting here.) A group of select ASME staff members, the Staff Technology Team, will further narrow the list to three to five technologies, which will be presented to the Board for approval in June.During the meeting, ASME President Julio Guerrero led a discussion on the actions being taken to follow up on the international delegation trips members of the Board took to Peru, India and China, while Bobby Grimes, senior vice president of the TEC Sector, presented the Board with a report on the role of the Sector Management Committee. In his presentation on Fiscal Year 2017 planning, ASME President-Elect K. Keith Roe discussed the strategic focus for the coming fiscal year, which included two critical objectives effective strategy and improving how the Society operates. Executive Director Thomas Loughlin then shared his outlook for the future of ASME and reviewed the trends he believed would impact ASME durin g his presentation, Association Future State One E.D.s View.Jeff Patterson, ASMEs new associate executive director of marketing, provided the Board with a summary of the current market environment. During his presentation, titled A Look At Market Trends and Their Implications, Patterson identified several trends that the Society should watch, including the emergence of Millennials as the dominant segment of the U.S. workforce, the growth of social media as a professional development platform, and the reality that content producers such as book publishers are rethinking traditional methods of bringing content to market. As a result, Patterson said, ASME must be aware of evolving conditions, open to new solutions, willing to experiment, and focused on results. In other meeting activity, the Board approved the reappointment of Kathryn Ingle and Keith Thayer as members of the Committee on Organization and Rules from June 2016 through June 2019, and the reappointment of Richard Goldstei n, Webb Marner and Reginald Vachon as Pension Plan Trustees from July 2016 through June 2019. A Green Thumb from a Smart Phone

A Green Thumb from a Smart Phone A Green Thumb from a Smart Phone A Green Thumb from a Smart PhoneThe joys of gardening are not for everyone. Even those with the greenest of thumbs know that raising a crop in the backyard can be a backbreaking, time-consuming, frustrating experience. Theres the work hoeing, watering, planting. And then theres bad luck. A successful crop is dependent on the right amount of sun and rain, healthy soil, and some method of keeping rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, insects, and disease at bay. Now, for those who want fresh, homegrown produce without the suffering, theres the Niwa, a self-contained, hydroponic indoor garden that can be monitored by a smart phone. The system requires next to nothing from its owner. You have to be home at least once a week to refill the water, says Zachary Damato, co-founder and COO of the company. To achieve that level of automation, Niwa relies on four sensors that gauge the humidity, lighting, temperature, and water level, and then adjusts conditions accordingly. Users can take a look at nutrient, water, heat, and humidity levels anytime they like, but they dont have to do much about them, beyond a click here and there. For You Weed-Fighting Robots Could Replace SprayingOccasionally the app will ask users things like Can you see any leaves? and will then modify the environment based on the answer. Its for people who are into gadgets, who are hobbyists, and who are running on a tight schedule, says Damato. It also provides fruits and vegetables throughout the year for those who might not live in appropriate climates, or who dont have the resources for small-scale farming. The new system enables anyone to grow their own food and plants in a small apartment space. renommee NiwaAside from getting all the pieces of the Niwa to communicate with each other, the chief hurdle to making it a reality was tweaking the heating system. We didnt want to have points that were too hot, so we needed a big heating surface, s ays Javier Morillas, an engineer and the companys CEO and other co-founder. It had to be waterproof and also required different plastic material than the rest of the system to bear the heat without deformation. On top of that it had to be subtle to minimize the impact on the aesthetics.Currently, Niwa units come in two sizes, one with a roughly foot-high growing area and one with two. The company sells a grow pack with all the nutrients, seeds, and growth medium needed to get started. Of course, not every plant can grow to full size in a two-foot high box. So Damato and Morillas have curated a host of dwarf plants that will grow to maturity in the Niwa system.Niwa owners are by no means limited to the seeds provided by the company. To a certain demographic, the word hydroponic is loaded with connotations that involve the illicit drug industry. Damato says that companies in the hydroponic business have to choose one side or the other and that we are on the fruits and vegetables side. He is aware, however, that two guys have hacked it and are growing cannabis.Niwa has sold some 400 units in the U.S., as well as 50 in Canada and 250 in Europe. The next version will have more customization and versatility within the app. Damato also hopes to create a community of Niwa users who may want to compete against each other. It will give them a structure to create a grow program, says Damato, gamifying it, in a way.But Damato has already met his primary goal that of giving anyone willing to part with $500 the joy of picking their own tomato and, he says, learning what it takes to make it happen.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Read MoreHow to Optimize 3D PrintingThe Impact of Tariffs on Engineering and ManufacturingThe Comeback of the Aluminum CanIts for people who are into gadgets, who are hobbyists, and who are running on a tight schedule.Zachary Damato, co-founder and COO, Niwa

3 steps to a successful 90-day performance review

3 steps to a successful 90-day performance review3 steps to a successful 90-day performance reviewThe 90-day review should be respected but not feared. Human-resources specialists share secrets to a successful review.HR departments at most large corporations have a formal 90-day performance evaluation in place for new hires. But even those organizations without formal processes often use that three-month mark to review your performance to date. The 90-day review should be respected but not feared, according to a trio of human-resources specialists I contacted on the subject. Here are their recommendations to prepare for job success and a strong 90-day performance review.1. Understand expectationsStep one begins as soon as you accept your new position. Make koranvers you and your supervisor are clear on what the organization expects from your performance in the first 90 days. You should be clear on the organizations goals, objectives and expectations.Keep the HR perspective in mind, sa id Dr. Jane Goldner, an HR consultant who has held positions at Coca-Cola and Georgia Pacific in her 25 years in the field. Human resources managers are asking themselves, Did we assess this persons skills correctly? Does she fit into our culture? Can we count on this person to be a future leader? Many organizations hire for skill only to realize that the candidate welchesnt the right fit, she said. For example, Goldner recalled a small company she worked with that hired a manager from a Fortune 100 company only to find that the manager welches accustomed to a large budget and staff and struggled in the new role. She became a turnover stat, Goldner said.Culture fit might be one of several areas that your superiors will want to evaluate. Learning expectations from Day One will set you up for progress by Day 90.2. Break evenMarben Bland, a human-resources strategist in Pittsburgh, said that in his experience most managers take mora than they give in the first 90 days.Despite your work experience, you are most likely inexperienced in the culture and the expectations of all the individuals you work with. The goal for your first 90 days should be to break even.First, create goals of what you need to accomplish, whom you need to meet and what systems you need to master. As an example, Bland recalled working with a CFO who moved to a new company that used an accounting system he had never used before. The CFO would not have been productive - taking more than giving - had he not become proficient on the system, which was old to the industry but new to him.Second, identify easy wins that give you and your boss a sense of accomplishment. Bland cited a marketing manager hired by a midsized company that was doing business with his prior contacts. Since the marketing manager had existing relationships with his new companys vendors, he was able to renegotiate more favorable contracts for the company based on his relationships - an easy win.Third, identify the problems you were hired to solve. Take steps to attack those problems in your first 90 days. You do not need to solve those problems completely in the period, but you must demonstrate action toward solving the issues, Bland said. It will accelerate the timeline where you can start giving more than youre taking.3. Deliver a strong presentationPrepare for the 90-day meeting as you would a critical presentation, said Lisa Boesen, principle of Houston-based Talent Innovations Group.Be results oriented, Boesen said. During the presentation, whether its an informal conversation or a more formal PowerPoint, review your objectives and quantify the results. Your supervisor wants to know the impact you have had on the organization. The better you can place a number on your results, the better impression youll leave.Boesen cites her own experience as an HR trainer at a large company. It wasnt enough to say, I gave a training (session) for 50 people. Instead her supervisor wanted to see accomplishments, so she quantified the results, including the feedback she received and how successfully the participants in her training class applied what they had learned. After your 90-day performance review is complete, take the opportunity to build and enhance the relationships you have made by sending an e-mail or calling key stakeholders to summarize your first 90 days, thank them for their participation, and tell them about some of your future plans. First impressions count, and your first 90 days will leave an indelible impression on your new organization. Make your first review a winner.
