In his presentation on Fiscal Year 2017 planning, ASME President-Elect K. Keith Roe discussed the strategic focus for the coming fiscal year, which included two critical objectives effective strategy and improving how the Society operates. Executive Director Thomas Loughlin then shared his outlook for the future of ASME and reviewed the trends he believed would impact ASME durin g his presentation, Association Future State One E.D.s View.Jeff Patterson, ASMEs new associate executive director of marketing, provided the Board with a summary of the current market environment. During his presentation, titled A Look At Market Trends and Their Implications, Patterson identified several trends that the Society should watch, including the emergence of Millennials as the dominant segment of the U.S. workforce, the growth of social media as a professional development platform, and the reality that content producers such as book publishers are rethinking traditional methods of bringing content to market. As a result, Patterson said, ASME must be aware of evolving conditions, open to new solutions, willing to experiment, and focused on results. In other meeting activity, the Board approved the reappointment of Kathryn Ingle and Keith Thayer as members of the Committee on Organization and Rules from June 2016 through June 2019, and the reappointment of Richard Goldstei n, Webb Marner and Reginald Vachon as Pension Plan Trustees from July 2016 through June 2019. In addition, the Board approved the appointment of Thomas Kurfess, Michel Margat, Shao Binan and Steven Wallace as members of the Council on Standards and Certification from June 2016 through June 2019. The appointments of Ankush Gupta, Marianne Chan and Siva Pilli as members of the Student and Early Career Development Council for the July 2016 to June 2017 term were also approved by Board at the meeting.BOG member Andrew Taylor was also named an ASME Fellow during the meeting. Coincidentally, as Rick was crafting that post, a reader named Jen G. left a comment on an older blog post, asking a closely related question.Jen is a new graduate who has posted her resume on various online job boards. Unfortunately, she wrote, I have rarely been called back from a site that I have posted my resume on. What do I need to do in order to get employers to notice my resume so that I get called back? Since this seems to be a hot topic, I've added a few more tips for Jen and anyone else who's wondering the same thing. Actively Pursue the Jobs Posting your resume for public viewing on web sites like Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com is a good first step, but it's a passive method of job searching. You have no power over whether anyone ever reads your resume or chooses to call you after reading it. Only IF an employer uses those sites for recruiting, and only IF your qualifications match their keywords, and only IF they read your resume and decide it sounds like a good fit will you ever get a call. That's a lot of ifs. In addition, a resume posted online is, by nature, a one-size-fits-all resume, not targeted to the specific needs of a particular employer. So leave the resume online, because you never know. But meanwhile, make your job search active, and take the power back into YOUR hands. Check ALL the Job Boards at Once Go to a site such as Indeed.com or Simplyhired.com, which are job board aggregators, meaning they search ALL the job sites for you (including Monster, CareerBuilder, company web sites, local newspapers, etc.). Select the keywords that are likely to be in the title or job description of your desired position, and do a search. You can narrow the search by zip code and other criteria. You can even save your search criteria and set up a job search agent that will keep checking these sites for you daily or weekly, and email you any matches.But again, keep it active. If you're not getting good results, try different keywords or expand your search area. Tailor Each Application to the Employer When you find a job that interests you, edit your resume and cover letter so they address exact keywords and phrases you found in the job description. For example, let's say they're looking for a Senior Office Manager and your resume shows you're a Senior administrator responsible for office management. Those mean the same thing, but you'll have better luck if you edit your resume to match the employer's terminology. You need to do that each and every time you apply for a specific job. So you'll have one basic resume and cover letter, but you'll tweak them for every employer. You may end up with 20 or more versions, each slightly different.It's a pain, but it's necessary. Be that a promotion or raise, industry switch, maybe a leap into entrepreneurship. But we all share the same bottom line - looking for an answer to the difficult question:“What’s next for me?”For some, working remotely or becoming a freelancer is just the transition he or she needs. With nearly “36 percent of the U.S. workforce” working in remote or freelance roles, it’s no wonder that perceptions of freelancing as a career are becoming more positive (at least, 69 percent agreed to that in a recent study). And yet, the idea of transitioning into a remote role or asking for flexibility is paralyzing. Our fear of the unknown or of being told “no” holds us back from discovering our new potential. I’m sure I’m not the only one who secretly dreams about sitting at a cafe in Italy, cappuccino in hand, while answering emails for a job you love. But how do we get there?And this is exactly where Schuyler Blyth comes in.As a Merchandising Marketing Manager for an e-commerce marketplace, Blyth did the seemingly unthinkable: She went from being a full-time, in-office employee to a contractor role working remotely in Europe. Not to mention - while still working for the same company. Which up until Blyth, had very few employees working remotely outside of headquarters. In this interview, Blyth shares how she successfully negotiated this new scenario, manages her work schedule and budget, and what it really looks like to live abroad. Her advice will leave you feeling motivated to evaluate your career, and how you can ask for what you truly want.“The major catalyst for me was watching one of my best friends travel the world while working remotely as a graphic designer. She was on the road for a full year, but after only a few months I decided it was something I needed to do.” Blyth recalls. “I started looking for remote jobs, with fully remote companies, thinking that [working remot ely] wouldn’t even be an option in my current role. So when I approached my boss, nearly a year later, I was shocked she was willing to try it out. I was confident I would figure out a way to make it successful, but the amount of trust that must have taken on the company’s end is enormous.”The year-long build up for Blyth gave her the courage (and urge) she needed to confidently work with her boss to develop a schedule that would work best for her, the team, and ultimately, the company.“We had a verbal agreement within a week or two, but it took a while to figure out the major logistics; when I would leave, what hours I would work, how I would be paid, etc. My boss had [worked remotely] in the past and suggested that I transition into a contractor role. This would last for 10 weeks, and I would work 30 hours per week, leaving plenty of time for moped rides and gelato. After that, we officially set a ‘resignation’ date, along with a start date for my new role, and my new life.” Blyth explains. “The freedom to go anywhere in the world was really exciting, but no matter where I was, I was still expected to work pacific time hours and hit all of my major KPIs. I have a very data driven role, and I was so thankful for that when going through this negotiation process, because we all agreed that with my job it’s very transparent if I’m not performing.”Living abroad sounds expensive, right? I was curious to know how Blyth was able to make it work financially, and what preparation she needed to do before jetting off. This transition from full-time employee to contractor did require a significant change to her salary, and the complete loss of benefits. For the first three months, she was able to live off of her salary without touching her savings, a success in-and-of-itself.“Once I got the approval to go abroad, I ended my month-to-month apartment lease and and turned in my car. What I used to spend on those expenses was then transferred towards paying for Airbnbs and big city metro passes,” Blyth explains. “I did the math and my hourly contractor rate was what I would have been making had I been paid hourly all along, but I was cutting down by 15-20 hours per week. This resulted in about a $30,000 pay cut at the start. But at that point, I was thinking ‘it’s just three months, I can make this work’ and it turns out I was able to live off of that just fine. I also knew that the pay cut would be worth it in order to live out my dream, and I haven’t regretted it once.”After her first contract period ended, Blyth was ready to negotiate. Triple-negotiate, to be exact. She asked to extend her contract, for a raise, and for more hours. As Blyth remarks, asking to work remotely in the first place completely changed her outlook on negotiation. With practice, the confidence to ask for what she wanted got a lot easier.“After the initial 10 weeks were up, I was hooked. I had never been happier, in both work and life, a nd I knew I wanted to continue. So I went back to my boss with a proposal. At that point I’d proven that this could work, and that I could be successful in my role even if I wasn’t at my desk. While I was confident in my ask, I was still a little nervous, and was genuinely surprised at how open they were to all of it. We ended up extending another 10 weeks, increased my hours to 35 per week and raised my hourly rate,” Blyth explains. “Going back to the beginning, I never would have thought, in a million years, that they would have let me do this. My biggest takeaway is: just ask. If you don’t ask for what you want, you won’t get it, because no one else is going to ask for it for you,” Blyth says.So now you may be thinking:“How can I do this, too”?While learning how to manage her time and maintain a social life came somewhat naturally to Blyth, she does believe that it takes a certain type of person to successfully work remotely.“There is a great amount of self-di scipline required, because no one is going to be watching over your shoulder to make sure you’re doing all of the things, and working the hours that you need to be. But with that discipline comes an exhilarating sense of freedom,” Byth says. “I don’t start work until about 4 pm, to coincide with Pacific Time hours, so I have a large part of the day to spend how I please. The work-life balance is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced with a 9-to-5. And then when it does comes time for work, I can work from almost anywhere: the airport in Paris, a pub in London while watching the World Cup, on the rooftop of a riad in Marrakech, or by a pool in Santorini. I’ve done all of them. Don’t get me wrong, it can be really difficult at times, and and it’s definitely not always fun. But I’m so thankful for this opportunity and committed to making it work, that the reward far outweighs the bad.”Throughout the last few months, Blyth has begun to feel more “confident, invinci ble.” Her new lifestyle has “made her more adventurous and open to new experiences, more free, and overall happier.” Enough said, right? But you don’t always have to recruit what you need from the outside. As Jean Martin noted in a Harvard Business Review article, outside hires take twice as long to ramp up as internal candidates. And of the 40 percent of leaders that are hired from outside each year, nearly half fail within the first 18 months. Hiring from within your company allows leadership candidates to apply intimate knowledge of the company when charting the course forward. These candidates have an easier time garnering buy-in from employees and customers alike, allowing them to get to work on growth and change much faster. However, it’s rarely as simple as deciding to promote from within; increasing the number of leadership candidates you can hire from within is a long-term goal that must be worked on over time. It’s up to current leadership to mentor tomorrow’s leaders. You need cubicles and offices for your new hires while retaining proximity for employees who work together frequently. You need to plan for common areas and conference rooms, creating an environment that fosters positivity, employee motivation, and satisfaction. When space becomes an issue, managers tend to think build more offices. Often, a less expensive space planning solution is reasonable with planning and space redesign. Gaining management input for peoples needs provides a proven approach to try to stay one jump ahead of your companys growth. Accommodating What Employees Want   If asked, almost every employee will tell you that they would be more comfortable, productive, and successful working without distractions in a private office. Often, the decision to use cubicles is a function of space and cost. Depending on the size of your business, cubicles might make sense. Now Im not saying that the letter she emailed was the only reason she got the job. But I have to say that it is a strong, positive affirmation of who she is and what she brings to the job.
